Ranger Program
The Birriliburu Ranger program is established, experienced and successful.
The Birriliburu Ranger Program is a culturally grounded land management initiative where Traditional knowledge leads practice, supported by science and partnerships. Established in 2009, the Birriliburu Ranger Program has delivered over 15 years of continuous on-Country land and cultural management across 6.6 million hectares of Martu Country. The Ranger Program helps provide access to Country for Martu people in an area which is rugged, remote and logistically challenging to visit and manage. The program is of great value to the community in Wiluna because it helps maintain people’s connection to Country and contributes to keeping Martu Culture alive.
The Birriliburu Rangers engage in work which includes fire management, weed and feral animal management, monitoring threatened species, and training opportunities. Rangers protect biodiversity, build climate resilience into landscape management, and strengthen cultural identity while contributing to the economic and social wellbeing of Martu people.
