Land Management
The Birriliburu Indigenous Protected Area’s land management goals are set by the Traditional Owners and focus on cultural care, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable country use.
Through our Ranger Program, BPL’s land management work includes:
Traditional Fire Management
Rangers conduct ground-based and aerial “right-way” burning to reduce bushfire risk, protect significant sites and protect threatened species.
Threatened Species and Biodiversity Monitoring
Ranger activities include surveying sites and monitoring species like the greater bilby, great desert skink (tjakura), and other wildlife important both culturally and ecologically.
Feral Animal & Weed Control
Ranger teams work to control invasive species and pests that threaten native plants and animals, using camera traps and deploying felixers (grooming traps for feral cats and foxes).
Canning Stock Route Management & Tourist Engagement
Our Rangers undertake on-ground land management including monitoring and maintenance of wells and infrastructure, visitor management, biosecurity control and ecological monitoring, ensuring that the Canning Stock Route remains safe, respected and sustainably managed for future generations.
Recording Traditional Knowledge
Two-way learning programs help document and preserve Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK), including bush foods, medicinal plants, landscape understanding, and seasonal patterns.
